Salin-de-Giraud: guided tour

In the 19th century, this village of 2,000 inhabitants was a salt workers’ village. Salin-de-Giraud was founded in 1856 by the entrepreneur Henry Merle, who wanted to set up an industrial site to turn harvested salt into soda ash.

This former workers’ village has a church built in 1865, the Barcarin church. But it is above all Salin-de-Giraud’s great fine sandy beach, Piémanson beach, that attracts the most visitors. It is nicknamed “the great beach of Arles”. By taking the sea dyke, you can reach Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on foot, on horseback or by bike. If you want to see flamingos, the emblem of the Camargue Regional Nature Park, the Fangassier and Galabert lagoons are where you are most likely to spot them. Camping lovers appreciate the region for its dunes and seafront, as well as for the proximity of Le Grau-du-Roi and its arena.
