Sightseeing in Uzès

Uzès is a town of just over 300 inhabitants with wonderful surroundings. Less than 50 km from Avignon, Nîmes and Alès, it stands on a promontory overlooking the garrigue, olive groves and vineyards. Crossed by the Alzon, Uzès is famous for its spring. In Antiquity, the water drawn here flowed through a 52 km aqueduct all the way to Nîmes. The Pont du Gard, an architectural masterpiece, is the best-known part of this aqueduct.

This town of art and history has a group of three massive towers known as the castles of Uzès. Take a good look, photograph them and enjoy getting lost in the narrow streets of the town centre. You will be surprised to see how well the historic heart of this former Roman city has been preserved. Discover the main monuments one after another, such as Saint-Théodorit Cathedral, the columns and gates of the Duché, Saint-Étienne church, the Fenestrelle tower and the former bishop’s palace. The Protestant church and the Hôtel du Baron de Castille, built next to the cathedral, are also among the finest buildings in Uzès.

Besides its fabulous cultural heritage, the town also has a national stud farm and a choreographic development centre.

Uzès: must-see sights for your stay

Among the towns of the Gard, Uzès holds a special place: head less than 50 km from Avignon to discover this charming village, built on high ground overlooking the surrounding garrigue.
Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, Uzès is a real haven of peace, home to around 300 inhabitants.
It is best known for its spring, which has existed since Antiquity and whose water was carried along a 52 km aqueduct to Nîmes.
The Pont du Gard is the most impressive architectural part of it.
Other buildings are worth visiting in the heart of the village: start with Saint-Théodorit Cathedral, a listed historic monument dating from 1090.

Among the more recent buildings, the town is also home to a national stud farm.
